Questions people ask

How do we get to Varanasi?
Flights from Delhi take about ninety minutes. Overnight trains run too, and we book either.
Is the evening aarti worth it?
Yes, and it needs planning. We take a boat so you watch from the water rather than a packed ghat.
Is photography allowed at the cremation ghats?
No, and your guide will say so clearly. Manikarnika is a working cremation ground, not a sight.
How many days are enough?
Two days: one for the river at dawn and the old city, one for Sarnath and the evening aarti.
What is the best time of year to visit Varanasi?
October to March, when mornings on the river are cool and clear. Dev Deepawali, held in November on the full moon of Kartik, is the most spectacular time of all, with every ghat lit by oil lamps.
Can I go to Varanasi from Agra?
Yes. Overnight trains run from Agra to Varanasi, or you can fly via Delhi. It fits neatly at the end of a Golden Triangle tour.
Can foreign tourists visit the Kashi Vishwanath Temple?
Yes, visitors of all faiths can visit the temple complex. Phones, cameras and bags are not allowed inside, so your guide will arrange lockers and take you through the queue.
What should I wear in Varanasi?
Modest, comfortable clothes that cover shoulders and knees, and shoes you can slip off at temples. The ghats and lanes are uneven and can be wet, so good grip matters more than style.
Is Varanasi safe for tourists?
Yes, with sensible care. The lanes are crowded and confusing, which is exactly why a local guide helps, and the boats we use are run by boatmen we know.
