Amritsar tours and sightseeing

Amritsar tours around the Golden Temple, the Jallianwala Bagh memorial and the evening ceremony at the Wagah border.

Why Amritsar

The Golden Temple is open to everyone, serves a free meal to anyone who sits down, and feeds roughly a hundred thousand people a day from a kitchen run almost entirely by volunteers.

Jallianwala Bagh is a five-minute walk away, and the contrast between the two is the point of a day here.

Questions people ask about Amritsar

Can anyone enter the Golden Temple?
Yes, regardless of faith. Heads must be covered, shoes left outside, and the pool walked around clockwise. Scarves are provided at the entrance.
Should we eat at the langar?
If you are comfortable sitting on the floor with everyone else, yes. It is the most quietly impressive thing in the city.
Is the Wagah border ceremony worth it?
It is loud, nationalistic and genuinely unusual. Go early — the stands fill well before it starts.
How long do we need?
One full day covers the temple, Jallianwala Bagh and Wagah. Two days adds the Partition Museum.
How do I get to Amritsar from Delhi?
Flights take about an hour, and fast day trains take around six hours. We arrange pickup at Amritsar airport or station.
What is the best time to visit the Golden Temple?
Early morning for a calm visit and the ceremony that opens the day, and again after dark when the temple is lit up and glowing on the water. Many guests go twice.
How far is the Wagah border and what time is the ceremony?
Wagah is about 30 km from Amritsar, roughly 45 minutes by car. The ceremony takes place shortly before sunset, so we leave in the early afternoon, and foreign visitors should carry their passports.
What food should I try in Amritsar?
Amritsari kulcha with chole, a tall glass of lassi, and Amritsari fried fish in the evening. Punjabi food is generous and rich, so come hungry.
Where is the best place to stay in Amritsar?
Close to the Golden Temple, so you can walk over early in the morning and again at night. The heritage street leading to the temple is pedestrian-only, so we drop you as close as cars are allowed.
