Ranthambore National Park in Rajasthan is one of the best places in the world to see a wild Bengal tiger. It is also an easy addition to a Golden Triangle trip: Sawai Madhopur, the town beside the park, is about five to six hours from Agra and three and a half from Jaipur.

How the safari zones work

The park is divided into numbered zones, and each safari vehicle is assigned to one. The central zones around the lakes and the old fort are the most famous for sightings; the outer zones are quieter and can be just as rewarding. You cannot choose to wander between zones once inside, so the zone allotted with your permit matters.

Jeep (gypsy) or canter?

  • Gypsy: an open six-seat jeep — quieter, more manoeuvrable and better for photography
  • Canter: an open bus for about twenty people — cheaper and fine for a first look
  • A private gypsy for your own group can be booked, subject to the forest department's daily quota

Safari timings

There are two safaris a day, each lasting about three hours: one starting at first light and one in the afternoon. Exact times shift with the season. Two or three safaris give you a far better chance of a tiger than one.

The best time to visit

The park's core zones close for the monsoon, roughly July to September, and reopen in October. October to March is pleasant and green; April to June is very hot, but the best time for tiger sightings as the animals come to the water.

Booking safaris

Permits are released online by the Rajasthan forest department well in advance and the popular zones sell out, especially in winter and over Indian holidays. Send us your dates early and we book the permits along with your lodge and transfers.
