Mathura is about 55 km from Agra on the Delhi road, and Vrindavan is 12 km beyond it. Together they are the heart of Braj, the land of Krishna's childhood, and one of the most loved pilgrimage regions in India. A day trip from Agra — or a stop on the way from Delhi — fits both in comfortably.

In Mathura

  • Shri Krishna Janmabhoomi, built over the site held to be Krishna's birthplace
  • Dwarkadhish Temple, in the old city, famous for its painted ceilings and swing festival
  • Vishram Ghat on the Yamuna, where an evening aarti is held with lamps and bells

In Vrindavan

  • Banke Bihari Temple, the most revered shrine in Vrindavan and usually packed with devotees
  • Prem Mandir, a white marble temple that lights up in changing colours every evening
  • ISKCON's Krishna Balaram Mandir, calm and welcoming to visitors from abroad
  • Radha Raman and Nidhivan, among the oldest and most atmospheric sites in town

Temple timings: plan around the midday break

Most Vrindavan temples close in the middle of the day — usually from about noon until 4 or 5 pm — and timings shift between summer and winter. Banke Bihari in particular keeps short opening windows. The best plan is to arrive by 9 am or after 4:30 pm, and to see Prem Mandir as the lights come on after dark.

Holi in Braj

Holi here is celebrated for a week or more, from the Lathmar Holi of Barsana and Nandgaon to the flower Holi at Banke Bihari. It is unforgettable and very crowded — book cars and hotels well ahead and ask us about the safest way to see it.

How to combine it with the Taj Mahal

  • From Agra: a full day — Mathura in the morning, Vrindavan in the afternoon, back by 9 pm after Prem Mandir
  • From Delhi to Agra: stop in Vrindavan and Mathura on the way, reaching Agra in the evening
  • With the elephants: the Wildlife SOS elephant centre is just outside Mathura — see our sunrise tour with elephant conservation

Frequently asked questions

How far is Mathura from Agra?
About 55 km, roughly an hour and a quarter by car. Vrindavan is another 12 km.
Can I do Agra, Mathura and Vrindavan in one day?
From Delhi it is a very long day. We recommend Mathura and Vrindavan on the way to Agra, with an overnight stay and the Taj Mahal at sunrise the next morning.
What is the dress code for the temples?
Modest clothing covering shoulders and knees. Shoes are left outside, so wear something easy to slip off.
