Delhi to Agra is about 230 km by road. Most of it is the Yamuna Expressway, a six-lane, access-controlled highway that runs 165 km from Greater Noida to the edge of Agra. On a normal morning the whole drive takes three to three and a half hours.

The route

  1. Central Delhi to the DND Flyway or Kalindi Kunj, then onto the Noida–Greater Noida Expressway
  2. Join the Yamuna Expressway at Pari Chowk, Greater Noida
  3. 165 km of expressway past Jewar and Mathura
  4. Exit at Agra and into the city via the inner ring road — 20 to 30 minutes to the Taj Mahal's East Gate

From Gurgaon, the route goes via the Faridabad–Noida link or the KMP Expressway, adding thirty to forty minutes.

How long does it take?

Leaving central Delhi at 6 am, you are usually at the Taj Mahal before 10. Leave at 8 and city traffic can add an hour. Coming back, the evening rush into Delhi is the slowest part of the day. That is why our same day tours leave early.

Tolls, speed and safety

  • There are toll plazas on the expressway and the Noida approach — FASTag is mandatory on Indian highways
  • Speed limits are enforced by cameras along the expressway
  • Fog in December and January can slow early-morning drives sharply; a good driver knows when to wait
  • Food courts and fuel stations sit at regular intervals along the expressway

Worth stopping on the way

  • Mathura and Vrindavan, the birthplace and childhood home of Krishna — see our Mathura Vrindavan guide
  • Akbar's Tomb at Sikandra, on the edge of Agra
  • The Wildlife SOS elephant conservation centre near Mathura

Self-drive or a car with driver?

We would always say a car with a driver. North Indian traffic is its own language, parking at the Taj is controlled and confusing for first-timers, and a driver who does this road every week knows where the fog sits and which dhaba is clean. Our car rental with driver covers sedans, SUVs, Tempo Travellers and luxury cars, with tolls, parking and driver allowance included.
